In the course
of a number of trips to the States, Helmut Nieberle
participated in workshops by Joe Pass, Attila Zoller,
Barney Kessel, Herb Ellis, Karl Ratzer, Jim Hall and
Peter Leitch. He took a correspondence course in
big-band arrangement at Boston's Berklee School of
Music. His friend Attila Zoller instilled a love for
the music of Django Reinhardt in Helmut - a major
influence on his first own band "Stringbag",
featuring Stefan Kalmer on violin.
The influential
German guitar critic Alexander Schmitz dedicated an
entire chapter to Helmut Nieberle in his ultimate
Guide to the Jazz Guitar, calling Helmut an especially
valuable asset to the scene.
Helmut was born
in 1956 in Kaufbeuren, Bavaria.
Since 1980, he
teaches at Regensburg Civic Music School, at Munich's
Free Music Center, at Augsburg University and at adult
evening classes in various cities. |

In 1982, he and
singer Axel Prashun, a kindred spirit, founded the duo
"Voice & Strings".
In 1983, Helmut
worked with legendary gypsy guitarist Häns'che Weiss
and formed the "Cordes Sauvages" (Savage
Strings).
1986 saw
Helmut's first meeting with Helmut Kagerer. The duo's
guitar projects received international acclaim; in
1991, it was awarded a special stipend by the State of
Bavaria.
Recording
partners include Arthur Blythe, Don Pullen, Chico
Freeman, Sam Rivers, The Kagerer Four, Albert Josipovic, David Gazarov and Milorad
Romic.
January 1998 saw
the release of Helmut's latest CD, "Skyliner",
recorded in a duo format with Helmut
Kagerer. |
