|Internationally experienced ace trumpeter Colin
Dawson's passion is traditional jazz, especially swing music.
tone and his wide range of expression, running the gamut from lyrical playing to powerful
soloing, have brought him international acclaim.
from his own projects, he can be heard as featured soloist on a multitude of recordings.
He has worked with jazz greats like Benny Waters, "Peanuts" Hucko, Billy
Mitchell, Butch Miles, Eddie Durham, Al Casey, Scott Hamilton, Red Richards, Danny Moss,
Red Callender, etc., and has toured all over the world.
Colin Dawson was
born in 1960 in South Shields, England.
At the age of ten, he
began a classical education as a trumpeter, which he continued
after finishing school at Newcastle College of Arts and
Between 1976 and
1978, he went on several pilgrimages to New Orleans, there to
learn from jazz greats like Preston Jackson, Jabbo Smith, Albert
Walters and "Kid" Thomas Valentine.
In 1979, he began his
career as a professional jazz trumpeter, making his first
recording with the Sammy Rimington Band A year later, the first
recording of his own band was issued: Live at the 100 Club,
During the following
years, he toured Europe with a variety of bands, until founding
the quartet "Oneward Band" in 1984. This was the combo
that was to accompany him for the five years to come.
In 1989, the Allotria
Jazz Band asked Colin to come to Munich. Until 1993, he was
responsible for the band's arrangements and joined it on a large
number of highly successful tours of Europe, the USA and Canada.
With his good friend,
Munich stride pianist Bernd Lhotzky,
Colin Dawson recorded a CD entitled "Sophisticated",
which was released in January 1998.
