Born
in 1962, Christian Willisohn is one of the most remarkable piano blues
virtuosos of his generation. Initially inspired by such piano legends as
Meade Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, Jimmy Yancey, Pete Johnson and stride
pianists like Fats Waller and Willie "The Lion" Smith, Christian
has developed his own personal style as a blues player and singer.
Uncountable club appearances and numerous festivals (e.g. Montreux, New
Orleans, Chicago) exposed him to a steadily growing audience of fans. His
work with such blues artists as Memphis Slim, Lillian Boutté and
Louisiana Red enhanced his reputation in Europe and the US.
On his new CD "Blues News" Christian joins young saxophone talent Boris Vanderlek who has been a featured member of the Dutch jazz band The Houdini's. Promoted by tenor giants Buddy Tate and Arnett Cobb, Boris has become one of Europe's leading saxophone players whose style is often reminiscent of the late Ben Webster's raucous sweetness. On some tracks assisted by organ player Ludwig Seuss, Christian and Boris show a nearly telepathical understanding throughout this live session. The unusual combination of piano and sax without a rhythm section leads to a performance both relaxed and dense that definitely is "blues news": a new approach to an old-time style. |
